Nahr El Bared Activities, 2007
In May 2007, fighting broke out in Nahr el Bared camp near Tripoli (northern Lebanon) between Fatah al Islam, an Islamist group, and the Lebanese Armed Forces. The conflict evolved to the siege of Nahr el Bared, home to around 30,000 Palestinian refugees.
Due to these events, many families had to move from Nahr el Bared camp to Al Baddawi, whose population increased suddenly. It became necessary to organize emergency activities for the displaced children, as an attempt to ease their tension and fill the emptiness they were suffering from. The center organized a series of workshops in June and mid-July 2007.
The activities aimed at developing the children’s abilities, strengthening their self-confidence, promoting team work, stimulating their love of active learning and creative expression. They were organized in strong cooperation with the local institutions in Al Baddawi camp. Most of the workshops took place in association with the Amal center, and the film screening took place in association with the UNRWA, the Bi'a and the Jarrah scouts, the girls Morchidat scouts, the Lebanese Red cross, and the Lebanese Palestinian dialogue comity.
Around 400 children attended the final presentation that was held at the end of the workshops in the Omar Kamel PlayGround. The clowns danced and showed some funny scenes. The Library group performed a theatrical representation about the story of a family that lost housing during a storm and had no solution but going to their neighbors’ house. One of the children read a poem entitled "a child and exile" and the others discussed it. The puppet theatre performed a small scene about dental hygiene, ending with a dabkeh dance presented by the Music group and the puppets group together. This presentation was much appreciated by the audience and was asked to be presented for a second time in the school.
