Puppet Making Workshop

This workshop was meant for facilitators who work with children around the age of eight years. Its goal was to teach the facilitators how to make puppets and move them in a theatrical show prepared by children. Another goal of this workshop was to gain technical skills based on educational methods that enrich and develop teaching abilities and extra curricular creative skills.

  • The duration of the workshop was four hours per day between ten and two in the afternoon
  • Mrs. Cam Leece and Mr. Yorg Grunert were the trainers

Old material was recycled to make the puppets and their clothes. This workshop helped in developing the creative abilities of the trainees which enabled them to discover the creative abilities of the children they work with. This workshop focused on the various stages of development: in the first stage the participant drew a puppet character that s/he would make. They took into consideration its age, social status, characteristics, place of residence and its relationship with its surroundings during this process. This was followed by the two trainers teaching the participants how to embody the puppet, out of a plastic bottle which formed the head. Strings were used for the hair and its clothes were made up of different pieces of cloth

The participants wrote stories that encompassed the character of their puppet and those of the other participants. The story revolved around the same number of characters as the number of participants. In the third stage the character of the created puppets was distributed among stories written by the participants, they divide into groups and each group wrote a different story in which the puppets are presented as characters.

In this workshop the participants were divided into three groups, each group wrote a story. Two of the groups presented complete theatrical shows while the third group only did an oral presentation of the story. They complained that the members of the group did not abide by the time. The theoretical aspect of this workshops involved ways of developing a story, the sequence of character appearance from left to right and in the middle, the manipulation of the puppets with the hands, technique of moving the fingers, character analysis and the extent of its attachment to its maker. The practical part concentrated on making the puppets and moving them on stage in a manner that suited the flow of the created story.
